The Lymington River and its Olympic Sailing Heroes

Lymington had much to celebrate with the return of their three medal winning Olympians. Ben Ainslie (right) Gold in the Finn, Pippa Wilson Gold in the Yngling and Nick Rogers Silver in the 470 class returned to their home sailing club the Royal Lymington Yacht Club to a hero's welcome. They join a long line of Olympians at the club going back to 1948.

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club began its life in 1922 as the Lymington River Sailing Club. From its small beginnings the club has grown to become one of the largest in the country with some 2800 members, Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal became its Patron in 1979. The open air sea water baths date from the late 18th century and were privately owned. Said to be the largest on the south coast they were popular with the public for bathing in salt water was said to be strengthening and healthy. Still open during the summer months they are now owned by Lymington Town Council. The balcony right of centre is part of the Lymington Town Sailing Club formed in 1946.
